Picnics & Parties

Picture
UCH folks love to get together for fellowship and fun. There are many opportunities throughout the year including our back to church picnic on the lawn in September, two auction events, numerous potlucks, dinners, community singing and an annual Thanksgiving dinner.
During the Harvest Home auction held in November, members and friends offer dinners, outings, trips, and game nights to sign up for. A win-win which provides additional income for the church and many opportunities to get to know folks during the year. There are some really creative offerings each year.  Past offerings included and Escape Room party, English Tea Garden, Southwestern party, and an all inclusive weekend in Chicago with tickets for Hamilton.

Celebrations: Beltane & Solstice

Picture
Join us in May for our annual Beltane celebration on the church lawn. Traditional cultures marked the beginning of at the beginning of May, and hoped and prayed for bountiful crops and healthy flocks. Our ancestors celebrated Beltane, around the first of May, with fires, festivals, and dancing around the Maypole. Our own Beltane celebration features music, food, drink, a pageant on the turning of the seasons complete with the Green Man and the Snow Queen, and of course our own Maypole.
Our solstice celebration happens the Friday evening closest to solstice and features songs, readings and a gently welcoming of the return of the light.
All ages are welcome.

Neighbor Nights

Picture
Because our church draws from over 19 different municipalities, we are spread out across the western suburbs.  The membership team has divided the congregation into different "neighborhoods" and sponsor Neighbor Nights each fall. One church member volunteers to host and invites all those who live within their area.  Good food, great conversation and real relationships are experienced in these evenings with many hosts repeating year after year.

Holiday Harvest - November
UCH folks gather each fall to offer up fun ways to be together each year while raising money for the church. Past year offerings have included Summer Teas, Vegan Dinners, Taco Nights, Escape Rooms & a Great British Baking Show-like contest among many others.  Folks pay for a place at a fellow church members table or offer up delicious meals to share over great conversation. This is one of the church's big fundraisers and also a source of great fellowship building throughout the year. Contact Paula Sejut-Dvorak.

Congregational Meetings
The church gathers for all member meetings one or more times a year.  The annual meeting is held in the spring to elect officers and conduct any business that may need to be done.  Only members are permitted to vote, although anyone can attend and see how the church governance works.
Other Congregational meetings are held during the year to vote on things like By-law changes or approval of large spending projects.  Again, only members can vote, which is a real value of membership in the church.

Acoustic Renaissance Concerts

Folk music reached its height in the 60s and 70s when baby boomers were united by the voices of Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and Judy Collins. Today, folk, Americana, and roots music continue to have a dedicated following among those who treasure this gentle form. In our sanctuary with its wonderful acoustics and a professional sound system, this series presents performers of considerable renown at a modest price, and is now going into its 16th season. Visit the web site at www.acousticren.com to see the latest offerings.
