Consumables
The first part of our Green Sanctuary effort is to make everything we do in and around the Church and RE buildings as friendly to the earth as we can. We plan to buy recycled products, use items that can be re-used instead of being thrown away, and recycle whatever we can. We call this program Consumables, and you’ve already seen some of our actions. At dinners and other events, we used real plates and silverware instead of disposables. This saved lots of paper and plastic from the trash, and some people said it added some extra class to the event. We have already instituted paper recycling with the big yellow bin in the alley, and we have now begun recycling bottles and cans, as well. At coffee on Sundays, you may have seen some us of bringing our own mugs instead of using the disposable cups; we hope to get enough washable cups and mugs on hand to eliminate throw-away cups entirely. We are also purchasing more recycled products, including copier paper, paper towels, and napkins. In addition, we will aim to buy Fair Trade items like coffee, tea, sugar, and other products. Fair Trade provides equity for the producers of the common goods, and reduces the stress on the environment.
